Using a promotion company for a CD release

Post by dgrieser » Wed Sep 30, 2015 6:39 am

Anyone have any recommendations for someone to help promote a CD? Seems like if the band sends it out, it'll probably get lost in the shuffle for reviews and air play. Maybe it has a better chance coming from a promo company with a decent reputation.

Waste of money? Your thoughts and recommendations of someone with a good reputation?

i think what you are looking for is a publicist.

my limited experience is that they can be helpful in possibly getting some exposure or press but don't expect a miracle.

You are indeed looking for a publicist.

depending on your budget, you will find one which will fit both what you need, and what you can afford.

The REALLY good ones cost lots and lots of money, but can get you great interviews in good avenues, along with good print media coverage, etc.

Is this your band? Or someone else that you engineered for?

Most publicists and promoters specialize in a genre. Be sure to find out who you'd be working with and what they do. Be specific and honest about what your band does. You'll do better with someone targeting exactly what your band does than with someone who is going to try to convince you that they can provide some "crossover" traction.

It does cost a lot of money to have it really pay off, but if you've got the right person, you can definitely do better getting some attention than just doing guesswork by yourself.

Just to talk numbers, my experience is that you're looking in the tens of thousands before you're spending enough to actually see results. Plenty of folks are willing to take a couple of grand from you, but it's just money wasted at that level.
