EV 664 (again)
Can we talk about this mic (again). I just did a search and discovered that a huge amount of 664 chatter on this board was from me a few years ago (sorry).
Since then I moved on to better options but after passing the 664 over for a few years I've come back to it again. I recently reconfigured the home studio for writing/demoing and because most of my better pieces are at my "real" studio I've been giving the 664's a go on all kinds of sources again.
I always loved it on bass and guitar amps but holy shit is it ever sounding great on kick! In this case the kick is a crappy Stewart 22" with no front head and the 664 is almost randomly plopped down on the pillow right below the beater. Kick, snare and OH are all running through a Yamaha PM430 and sub-mixed to one track on my cassette 4 track. It's a supper thump-y sounding kick already without a ton of subby lows but the 664 sounds really great with this kind of kick. It's more of a knock then a boom (if that makes any sense), think Levon Helm on the early Band records.
Anyway, is anyone else using this thing? What for?

Weirdness.
I just used it today on vocals into a ISA1 and RNLA. I always feel like it's almost pre-EQ'd for a mix for that. I also used it on the lead guitar, same chain.
I've never tried it on anything else.
I do have 2 - one is broken and makes a cool special effect mic, kinda telephone-ish and distorted.
When I have the song finished - mebbe tomorrow - I'll link it.

I've got three, two of which are the newer single side port style and the other the older three port with the extra innards. All a bit different. Like the old one more on bass, the new one I haven,t tinkered with on guitar and kick - pair it w/ 635 o/hs and instant retro vibe. The one I tinkered with is sibilant but still sounds good on certain vox.
Village Idiot.

I used one as a "heartbeat" mic awhile back and it totally brought the "snap" in the kick and snare. I need to remember to do that again!
