Anyone familiar with this? How does it compare to a more standard PZM?

Cardioid, not omni. Basically the same thing, in a different shape, as the Shure SM91. The SM91 is one of those weird-but-classic kick drum mic choices in the live world.

We've got one of those at my studio. I end up using inside kick, as a room mic or taped inside the piano. Its more useful than amazing if that's any kind of discription. Its never s mic I plug in and think "wow! I love that sound" but the its a really useful problem solver.

This was recorded @ Electrical by Steve Albini. Apparently the Crown PCC160 was used as a room mic on the lead vocals. Worth a listen.

Wow, great heads-up, thanks!

I read this last night, thinking two things-- "I'll listen to that link tomorrow," and also I thought that you said "room mic on 'drums'." Going back and reading "lead vocals," and listening to some of those tracks, I'm pretty blown-away. I assume that it was a room mike in conjunction with a more conventional close mike on vox (maybe I'm wrong about that too?)... Where did you find your info on the miking scheme for this record, eh9? I'd love to read some more about it. Was it in a TapeOp article that I missed?

Here's a TOMB post from a band member who used to post here as mikoo69.
http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopi ... highlight=
The intro post indicates the recording techniques, gear used and indicating the use of the Crown PCC160 on vocal.
The band was based in NYC and were trying hard to get a break for 3-4 years until 2013 when they disbanded. They had many interviews and reviews from local zines and indie press. The guitarist and original vocalist/drummer have a new project, In Flux. https://www.facebook.com/influxlive
They're trying a new approach, more contemporary/modern I guess.

In my previous post I forgot to answer your question GJ. Looks like the PCC160 was used as a room mic, main mic was a Neumann U48 (tube), the Crown was triggered from the U48 chain, dependent on the loudness of the singer. the PCC160 was also used as a room mic for the guitar amp.

Great info, thanks again. My initial reason for posting a question about this mike is that I might have a line on a good used one for a decent price. I'll have to see if it's still available!

Too bad about the band. Russ Kunkel had a saying about where the majority of hard-working bands wind up: "I played with _________ until eventually, that went the way of all bands."

There really are more good bands than there are aware/literate listeners, aren't there?
