4 channels of HPF/LPF in one rack space?

Post by Magnetic Services » Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:37 am

I feel like I've seen a unit like this before. Anybody know of a product like this?I love my RAMSA board, but it lacks high-pass filters, which I find indespensible! Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just solidly built and clean-sounding. Preferably something easy to find used on eBay.

Harrison makes an 8 channel one (832C) - not cheap but still rather cost effective "per channel":

D&R made a 1/2 RU 2-channel unit (I have 2 of those). But they are hard to find used...

Yeesh, that Harrison box is pretty comprehensive but I'm only looking to spend a couple hundred or so. I suppose I need HPFs more than LPFs, not necessarily both.

Can you give me the model number of the D&R? And would it be hard to find the hardware to mount them together?

If you're trying to save money, there's gotta be a reasonable way to DIY several passive ones.

Otherwise I would have recommended the API L200 rack loaded with L215 modules

The Aphex 612 gate/expander also has a pair. I bought one for $60.

Good point! The Drawmer DS201 is a similar gate if you want to expand your search.

Press "key listen" and the audio path travels through the adjustable filters. The 612 is an excellent box for other uses too. It's about the best gate out there and doubles as an excellent expander.

I used to use them to mix with, I would "de-compress" over squashed tracks with them before the brick wall techniques made that impossible. Give me 3 db to work with and I can fix those tracks here.

The gating is also excellent but I've not needed that feature here as I don't have any noise issues to fix.

So now my pair mostly collects dust awaiting the need for those excellent filters. I found they are very usefull for reverb sends and returns. I do a lot of acoustic jazz here and the overheads can be HP filtered. The returns are also used with the low pass filters to keep excessive reverb cymbal leakage in control.
