Recommendations for a good cheap stereo mic

Post by Dubmaniac » Sun Jan 28, 2018 11:56 am

I had one. It's gone now. No idea where it went. So now I need a replacement. I want to use it for drum overheads. Oh- and I'm poor. What would you buy if you were me?

I've been eyeing the Avantone CK-40 or a while...

I don't know if $599 counts as cheap for you, but I think it's at the lower end of the spectrum for these things... otherwise that 12 Gauge is the cheapest option I believe.

Any reason you don't want a matched pair on a stereo bar?

Little more mucky-muck, but it would open up options for mic choices, prices, as well as X/Y vs. ORTF configurations which is more fun.

You can get a Stereo ribbon mic from here:

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I quite like the RM BIV russian stereo ribbon which can be had for $300-ish depending on exchange rates.

But that black212 12gauge mic sounds pretty nice, and the small size should make it easy to mount. Though the drum overhead samplewas my least favorite of what they had on their site.

Good to know, been thinking that should be my next mic purchase.
