Speaking of 7506's

Hi,

I have 2 pairs of Sony 7506 headphones that have become a little dodgy at the plug. Sometimes I have to wiggle the wire or turn the plug in the jack a bit to get sound to come out of both ears. Is that little plug repairable? I haven't tried opening it yet because it's not obvious to me how to open it. Do they just unscrew? Or do I need new plugs?

What do you guys do when you start getting intermittent sound in one ear of your 7506's?

BTW I don't want to replace with a 1/4" only. I'd like to retain the ability to use the cans with my phone and/or my mixing board.

Sounds like the hole you plug them into is Dirty.

Use some 99% alcohol on both the plug and the receptacle, with a cotton swab.

I have two 7506's and none do this. Unless the hole I plug them in is dirty.

Also try cleaning any adapters you use.

I typically clean them once to twice a year by default, and every time after a session.

Hope you don't hafta replace, but replacement TRS 3.5mm jacks are readily available, like here (or ten plastic covered for the same price) - shouldn't be too difficult a solder job.

Or, easier (mebbe) soldering.

Or (looks funny) solderless.

Finally, I note that I try to never plug nuffin' inna "dirty hole".

Funny, my 7506's started doing the same thing at the same place.

My (much cheaper) AKG K44's, on the other hand, have had no problems with the wiring at the plug and don't look like they ever will.

I dumped the 7506's a few years ago in favor of the much flatter response of the K44's. The 7506's are much more hyped, especially in the low end.

This is why I love them for tracking. I don't have to boost the bass for the musos.

The 1/8" to 1/4" screw on adapters that come with them eventually fail by cracking and separating down the middle, I've probably had a half dozen do that over the years. It's not obvious at first, but if you take it off the tip may pull out of the ring and sleeve section. Worth checking. Those things coming slightly unscrewed has been cause of many an intermittent during a session. I Locktite them on.
