Beyer Mic repair
Hola! Any advice on parts/repair for an 80's Beyer M88 (pre-tg)? Digging around online getting me nowhere. Thanks!

Re: Beyer Mic repair
Is this a ribbon mic?
I would call these guys, if they can't do it, they'll know someone who can:

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I have no idea about DIY repair, but I had a dead M88 that I got fixed by this place:
http://unitedsoundservicesllc.com/
It cost about $180, I forget exactly what the deal was but probably just replacing the whole diaphragm.

Wow,thanks! Ill check them out. Its not a ribbon, but it's pretty much my fave dynamic. I dont think Ive ever had or used a Beyer that wasnt awesome.
I later bought one of the silver classic reissues, and I recall Beyer not wanting m88s used on bass drum, which is sad, cause its my fave kick mic.

Re: Beyer Mic repair
FWIW I asked about this when I got mine repaired because it died while being used on kick drum. The guys at United Sound Services said using it on kick drum should not be a problem, BUT mine is the newer TG version, I'm not sure if it's significantly more durable than the original.Burnt Ernie wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 12:38 pmI recall Beyer not wanting m88s used on bass drum, which is sad, cause its my fave kick mic.

Re: Beyer Mic repair
I believe a big part of the TG version is that the grill is beefier and can handle higher SPL.Matt C. wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 5:44 pmFWIW I asked about this when I got mine repaired because it died while being used on kick drum. I haven't made a full band type record without M88s somewhere in a long while.

We tried to get a Beyer M-500 repaired by Beyer and despite sending it back 2 times it never came back the way we remembered it.Nick Sevilla wrote: ↑Sat Mar 10, 2018 2:23 pmhttps://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/ ... rt/repairs
Maybe this then...

Re: Beyer Mic repair
For the Beyer ribbon mics, they still service the M160 and M130, and the newer ribbon mics(RM510?, TG V90r), but no longer service the M260 and M500 ( I reribbon a lot of M260 and M500 at https://repair.ulrigg.com).
For the microphones they do repair, they swap the internal motor/assembly, rather than install a new ribbon.
Sorry, that's totally unrelated to the M88, but should answer any ribbon ??'s
Regards

Re: Beyer Mic repair
Too bad about your troubles with the M500, roscoenyc. Following a post by you I bought one a few years ago, and love it.
I especially like using it for vocals when the HVAC in my bedio is likely to turn on. It sounds excellent, almost like a slightly dark condensor, and doesn't pick up ambient noise from the forced air system I have here.
I like it so much for that purpose, I have never used it on an amp, which I believe you also liked it for ...
Cool design, also, when you take the windscreen off (I hadda see it), and I believe it's a cardioid.

Yeah I love the M500 for vocals.
Around the time ours started acting up I discovered those Telefunken USA M-80 hypercard dynamics.
Those have taken over where the M500 used to be for us. Really one of the great microphones.
We use it on vocals, snare and acoustic guitar too when we are doing the Vocal and acoustic at the same time.

Damn you!
Now I must spend mo' $ ...
Actually, I recall you posting re those, also, and they are on my list.
Still trying to get a SE Z5600a for cheap, first.
On this topic, I can reco the older, black-resin (fiberglass?) Senn MD handhelds. Some are better than others, but damn are they cool.

We got our M500 back. I'm on vacation but my partner Tim, who sent it in, said it sounds great.
Thanks so much Shinybox!
