Tape Storage Question - In the supplied plastic bag or no?

Post by markjazzbassist » Thu Aug 16, 2018 11:12 am

I'm starting to get a little big of a collection going vis a vis the 1/4" tape i use to record. The question is do you keep it in the plastic bag that comes with it inside the case? or just the reel inside the case with no bag?

Hmm, I suppose the bag could hold or build up a small static charge. It might be a non-issue, but anti-static bags might be the best option.

yeah i didn't know if it protected from dust or something. they all ship with it (even my NOS scotch 207 i use) just trying to figure out the best method going forward. more than happy to toss it if it could cause issues.

I always store my tape in the bag in the box. I’ve never encountered reels inside antistatic bags. When I’ve purchased used tape it almost always comes in the bag and the box, if not then just loose in the box.

Only if it is the factory, anti static bag.

Otherwise, ditch it.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

The bag prevents it from breathing as well, and traps humidity. It ships in the sealed bag to keep humidity out, but once it's open it simply traps it.

Thats a great explanation.
