Recommend Me Some Room Tuning Software

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Mon Mar 04, 2019 7:24 am

Looking for something to help me nail down and fix some sonic gremlins in my new space. My biggest issue is bass (as expected). It's uneven depending on where I'm sitting. Certain notes are boomy others weak.

What's a decent and affordable program for room analysis?

If you're just looking for room analysis, REW seems to be pretty good (and it's free). If you're looking for corrective software, Sonarworks gets a lot of praise. I just bought their calibrated reference mic, and am planning to download the demo this week. You can probably get in the ballpark using a Behringer ECM8000 or similar, but I've heard mixed reviews when using anything but the Sonarworks mic.

REW is awesome. Everyone should have it. I'll make it easy for you:

Here's a helpful primer on getting it set up:

Fantastic! Thanks.
I'm not looking for corrective software. I just need to identify problems so I can implement real world solutions.

Prepare to go down the wormhole.

You're going to get so tired of hearing that sine sweep. But it is really super helpful.

Acoustics is weird and counter-intuitive, and it's easy to make things worse. So keep the mic set up in the exact same spot and test every time you change anything.

I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous, but I'm happy to help interpret results/suggest stuff if you want.

Do you have to buy their recommended $70 test mic, or can you use a reasonably flat-response condenser?
