There's just got to be some coming recording space sound treatment usages for this stuff:

that's cool - I think it could be particularly useful for ventilation systems. One of my concerns with having an airtight studio (to keep sound in and out) is how do you get fresh air? My studio has a split ductless and just recirculates air, so fresh air comes in when i open the door...

i suppose it could also be used in those mic shields or even to place in reflective areas around monitors? someone will definitely make a product. :-)

Maybe we can start attaching them to trumpets and drummers and guitar players.

You jest, but as some flavor of a trumpet mute it might just work, no?
I wonder if they could be configured into small cheerio sized units fashioned into curtains for windows or even hung just inside doorways, or placed inside or against doors, or as 4x8 sheets for wall installs. Like a lightweight version of lead sheeting. Could this be the harbinger of great things like acoustic drumsets alongside the family room? These things I ponder.

You would think so. I could imagine a lot of good applications if it would continue to work as it was scaled to different functions.

I think HVAC an power supplies with fans (MCI, AMEK) could really benefit from this.

the article is hyping it up to be something it's not

more details here :

https://journals.aps.org/prb/abstract/1 ... .99.024302

listen to the clip in the OP's link for example

the broadband noise hardly changes level - only the narrow tone does

cool but they make it seem like it's gonna stop 90 something percent of all sound which I don't think it's remotely capable of

From what I gather it's the shape that's rejecting sound, not the material. And it seems like it has to be finely tuned for one frequency or range of frequencies. So heck yeah I'm sure it's great for exhaust systems, etc, but maybe not much else :(
