Rugs: 1 big one VS. a few smaller ones

Post by DrummerMan » Sun Apr 21, 2019 3:44 pm

Next dilemma which is about a month away...

My room is about 16'x19'. Control room and live room all in one (garage).

Aesthetically, I like the idea of getting one big rug, like 13x15 or maybe 9x13.

Functionally, though, I see how it could make sense to have a few rugs. 1 by the mixing area, another for drums, then another in front of the little couch I'm putting in.

Strong arguments in either favor?

Several rugs would allow you to "tune" the room for different situations.

Maybe you should have a few instead of one big one: one for the mix area, one dedicated to drums, a couple of smaller ones for amps/keyboards/whatever. This allows you to affect the acoustics of the tracking area better; less rugs=more reflection; more rugs=more damping.

Wall to wall lo-pile commercial squares with area rugs atop, as needed?

No rug by the desk.
You'll be able to roll around on your chair better.

Given a choice between barfing on a hardwood floor and a rug, a cat will choose the rug 99.8762% of the time.

Anyway I vote for a few small rugs, and only if necessary. Hard floor/soft ceiling!

OK, so that sounds like a good reason to go for several smaller rugs. Easier to clean, easier to swap out for another small rug when you're too busy to clean rugs.

I bought a few rugs for my live room (31x23) two years ago. I got two fairly big ones (8x11 maybe) and three slightly smaller ones (4x6 or so). I wish I'd just gone with all smaller ones as it would have allowed me more flexibility and frankly, more options. Not so much sonically, but just placement-wise. I'm always having to move a million things when I want to change it up. Downside to more rugs is storage space when you're not using them.
