I think I had a long talk with Geoff Daking about this once, and he said to leave it on. The rush of current and filling capacitors at turn on is when the system gets stressed. But I turn off the RND 5088 here. That way the AC doesn't run all night cooling the room down. The again I could fry eggs on it in the morning if I left it on!

Thought 2: Give the gear the on/off stress test and you'll know when it needs work before it completely surprises you?

thanks for all the ideas. Larry could you elaborate a little on the "on/off stress test" or am i just over thinking things

also, side note. i wish i could go back in time and punch whoever was responsible for putting the phantom switch on the input cards of the 80b right in the mouth.
sounds good, compress it

"on/off stress test" just means turning it off and back on.

Don't the manufacturers have recommendation?

I'm surprised console manufacturers haven't developed power supplies to mitigate this. I get that you might want to leave a vintage board on during consecutive days of recording to minimize wear and tear, but buying a new bajillion-dollar console that you can't turn off for fear of damaging is just ludicrous.

This reminds me of the Mythbusters light bulb episode: https://www.vanderbilt.edu/sustainabili ... he-lights/

I think it's more of a worry with old consoles, not brand new ones.

Probably the manufacturers didn’t dream that folks would still be using the same board in 40 years is my guess.

I've heard the same debate with both diesel engines and computers. it's a religious war.

I believe there’s some truth in computers.

At my work we have a couple 25 year old sun microsystems terminals in daily use still...granted these are not x86 based systems, but I rarely turn the computers off because that’s when I get problems...they don’t want to start up, may take several power cycles to get back going again, etc... And the printers they control may benefit from this practice too, but those pull down so much juice just idling (some heating elements up to 400 degrees, 3 phase power, etc) I kill those every night regardless.

Developed two new issues with my A&H Saber after powercycling... channels 17-24 stuck on 'mute', and just today, the Left master output no longer reads sound. The only way I do get sound in the left master output is if I PFL Solo something.

So, not sure if powercycling is the issue, or if it's just bad luck.
