tube amp burning smell...

Post by joninc » Wed Dec 04, 2019 1:47 pm

hey audiomigos.

my little SF fender vibrochamp is giving off a burning smell but appears to be working fine... it started a little while ago and i haven't used it too often so i keep forgetting about it.. until i turn it on again. Obviously I don't want to damage it further so it's off now.

Can't see any actual smoke - tubes aren't doing anything weird... but it's definitely smelling bad and has done so a few times now - once I did use
it for probably 1.5 hours or so so it's not some dust that's burning off or anything either.

what should I be looking for?

Does this sound like a tube issue or something in the circuit?

Caps maybe? Sounds like it needs a trip to the tech.

Very different amp, but I was tracking with a V4 once, noticed a burning smell (not dust)... when I looked in the back, one of the tubes was glowing like a 1000w light bulb. Actually melted the socket.

I'm guessing you would have noticed something like that, but figured I'd mention it.
