Your storage solutions - esp for cables

Post by permanent hearing damage » Sun Dec 22, 2019 5:36 pm

I have a new spot and for once need to be efficient with my use of space. What are folks using as far as storing cabling, especially? I’m thinking some kind of hook/dowel situation on the walls would be a good plan. Are there some ready made things that aren’t unnecessarily expensive?

I use wall-mount coat and tie racks.

Wrap the cables in a circle. Put a 6" tied loop of shoelace or string around the cable loop and through itself to hang longer cables. Extra pedal cables get a looped wire tie tied on one end.

I've got a two drawer file cabinet (old, heavy and less prone to rattling at hight volumes). Mics in one drawer, cable in the other.

I've got a couple of the premade "coathooks on a piece of wood" that you can pickup at Home Depot/Lowes/Walmart. They work for hanging cables and headphones. I have some snakes that I put into clear plastic bins/totes with lids so I can stack them on shelves (the black plastic kind - "Plano" I think is the brand from Walmart - about $15 each for the shelves).

I have a few pre-made coatrack that have five straight dowels on a slight upward angle. Most of my XLRs are on those. 1/4" are on top of the Hammond. Headphones in a small light dresser type thing, and their extension cables are on the headphone amp rack.

I forgot the over-the-door I have, yeah - that gets the lesser-used cables.

And the Plano boxes is great for tube mic's to keep 'em with the power units and the special cable.

Another thing would work OK mebbe, what I use for mic's: a over-the-door shoe-pocket thing.

I used these coat racks:

I also have one of these and it's good, but relatively costly:

PS: I am not affiliated in any way with Amazon, I just waste much of my disposable and otherwise income there.

I just kind of happened to have a spare keyboard stand around, so most of my mic cables hang off of that. Then I decided to move the dresser out of my kids' room to give them more space, so I moved that to studio. It's got four drawers - headphones and stuff, mic and stuff, adapters and DIs and stuff, and more common cables, snakes, and stuff. I thought about getting some sort of drawer organizers or containers or something, but realized I had like every box for a microphone or pedal or anything that was kind of little just sitting around "in case I need them", and that this was as good a use as any. Not fancy and maybe not particularly pro looking, but it makes a real difference for me, and I pass the savings on to my customers.
