repair 414 headbasket

Post by joninc » Mon Dec 30, 2019 8:42 pm

i know - i know. This mic is working fine but took a fall about 9 months ago and the headbasket is broken where the bar that wraps over the grill connects to the sides of the mic... been trying to come up with a solution that doesn't involve sending to the AKG specialist in Tennessee for $400+.

I can buy a replacement AKG frame from Reverb for about $80 but I'm not confident that I can successfully move all the guts over...

https://reverb.com/item/25776140-akg-20 ... c414-b-uls

I can't seem to find any videos or instructions on how to do this.

Amyone got any bright ideas? It's currently zap strapped on which looks terrible and can't be ideal with omni...

but the mic is working fine!

Without seeing it I can only speculate, but if you don't want to swap your guts into a new frame what about a repair using an epoxy like JBWeld? The basket on the 414 is very important for RFI suppression so make sure electrical continuity is maintained...

As I work for a rental company, and our gear has to be solid... we sent our two 414's with the broken frame to the guy in Tennessee, aka Land Audio. It wasn't cheap, but the mics came back 100%.

If you send it to AKG, it'll be expensive and there will be a lot of red tape. If you contact Richard Land directly (without going through AKG), you might save yourself a few bucks and some headache. Richard does good work.
