Sytek Mic Pre Improvements
Sytek Mic Pre Improvements
atomiumamps has an interesting tumblr blog article about Sytek MPX-4Aii mic preamps and attempts to implement different op amps to improve performance. I'm thinking about sending one of mine in for Matt's mods...

Even by the blog's description, the change doesn't sound very dramatic at all. Are you sure it's worth it?

I would agree. if you are going for clean, there are other clean pres. if you are going for color, there are other much more colored pres out there. but it's your money...

The mods are not expensive, but yes, I agree with you that the changes may not be all that noticeable.winky dinglehoffer wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2020 10:36 pmEven by the blog's description, the change doesn't sound very dramatic at all. Are you sure it's worth it?

Do they need to be "improved"?
They are excellent preamps stock. I couldn't imagine them being much better than they already are.

Re: Sytek Mic Pre Improvements
this won't do anything worth the time or $ imho
Re: Sytek Mic Pre Improvements
I'm generally game for experimentation but I don't think I'd throw any more time or money at the Syteks. I have them and I rarely use them but I would suggest either keep them as is- they are useable, if slightly "plain" sounding preamps- OR maybe just save up and get something more clean or more colored, depending on your needs. I've got Grace pres for clean and BAE and Warm for "color."

Re: Sytek Mic Pre Improvements
Yeah, I'd second the 'fine as is' statement. But since everyone is throwing some subtle shade at the once-lauded Sytek I will say that those pres will never be a problem on anything, They will always work, and you have to spend a good deal more $$ to get something that's clearly better. I mean, for doing vocals I'd want a tube compressor on the back end to round things out, but they're great for percussion/drums and just fine for guitars/bass/strings/piano.
