Wave Anomaly

Post by nicholasdover » Tue Feb 18, 2020 2:05 am

I recorded a couple of mics on kick to compare sounds and noticed this "wave within the wave" on the LDC (light grey)where the ribbon has no sign of it. Anyone know what that is? It doesn't sound odd at all, just interested...

It looks similar to the shape you get with popped Ps and plosives. What was the position of the mic?

3" in from edge, 4" out from skin. It was sounding good! No pad on mic tho so padded at the VP28 preamp, no attenuation required after the pre. Do reckon it's still a distortion where the capsule's being overloaded?

Might be air moving more than than distortion.

Is the mic in question in a suspension mount, and able to swing back & forth a bit?

It seems to respond like that to the louder strikes, but not the quieter ones?

This, or something like it would be my guess. The bass drum has a way of kind of being a wind tunnel with some recoil, and quick pressure adjustments that happen shortly after an audible strike.

Thats' what I mean when I say it looks similar to a plosive (like a popped P). That wave shape on a plosive doesn't always mean distortion or overload. It's a representation of that blast of air hitting the capsule.

Totally. You can just imagine the capsule doing a little flutter in the wind. I feel the air from a ported kick drum head striking my pant leg frequently at band practice, sometimes from 8-10 feet away.

4th'd.

Ive been mixing podcast episodes for my job and every time there is P-pop, or big "f" or "w", the waves get that look to them. Makes it easy to spot em.

That is air movement. Not too much of a concern as long as you are getting the sound you're after.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Scratch: itched.
