The Cue Send On My 388 Is Mono Only

Post by Mark » Fri Feb 28, 2020 4:14 pm

By which I mean the signal from the Aux Sends, pre-fader. Was this standard practice back in the day?

Seems an odd way to go about it.

Yes, things like stereo cue were really a high-end feature. Nowadays with digital consoles stereo cue and such is becoming common even on the cheap end.

So everyone in the live room basically got the same cue feed to their headphones? That must have been fun.

Well the 388 was really a home studio device more than anything, I don’t think it was intended as the centerpiece of any serious multiroom commercial studio.

You still could set up several different headphone feeds using the 388 if you really were determined to. There is a separate “monitor” section right there for that, you have the main headphone outs, you have the aux send, the effect send, and you have the direct channel outs which you could feed into a separate mixer/headphone system and create further discrete mixes if you wanted....there are absolutely workarounds beyond just the aux.

Presumedly though at the time this came out, if you had a real studio with luxurious things like separate rooms you probably had a big boy desk not the 388, and could set up multiple cue feeds pretty easily for tracking.

That's how my room is still set up. A stereo send from the console, to a headphone amp with 6 outs.

I'd be interested to know what kind of multiway headphone amp would be suitable for use with the cue send of the 388.

I use one of these. cheap price and I can send 3 different mixes to it. but to be honest 90% of the time I have the same mix going to all channels. there are several brands with similar setups (although not always multiple inputs)

i don't think anyone used a 388 for live tracking back the they came out! It was a hobbiest's toy. Some dude pumping out endless guitar solos over a drum machine!

As a minimalist and starving musician, I've always had a mono send. And still do.

Did anyone make a mono in/multi out headphone amp back in the day?

You can use any off the shelf headphone amp. You just have to wire your own feed cable so that hot signal is applied to the tip and sleave of the jack going into the headphone amp (so it ends up in both ears). Your feed will be mono but I've never had an issue with that when tracking.

You mean hot to tip and RING right? I think tip and sleeve would short the signal and you would get nada.

Sorry, yes, I mis-typed. Hot to tip and ring.
