Doors?

Post by The Scum » Fri Aug 07, 2020 2:15 pm

Does anyone have good pointers to soundproof doors?

The conversations with Overly & Kreiger made my wallet hurt.

I see a lot of less prestigious names (HMF Express?) with STC offerings around 50.

Pretty sure I don't want to pursue the John Brandt sand-filled door, though the Gervais "Superdoor" might be worth a closer look, though with parts & labor, it looks on par with some of the mid-grade prefabs.

Does anyone have door wisdom to impart?

Double doors with frames as part of discrete wall assemblies, solid core doors with weather stripping. That did everything I needed it to, but I haven't tried recording a mandolin right next to the door while an Ampeg was roaring bass on the other side, so it's not like there's zero transmission. Just minimal enough not to be relevant.

I used a steel French double entry door in my old place. Did a great job.

Forget the brand, but the contractor got it at Home Depot.

I remember, in 2008, it cost some 1K USD plus tax.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

They did carry on, more or less, with Ian Astbury many years later, but with Manzarek dead ...

The Gervais book is so valuable.
There's just so much good info in there.
I don't know how anybody could pass up such a great overview.

So, I made double semi-super doors for my garage studio. It was a 2 leaf system so that was what was appropriate, but even one of them blocks out *most* of the sound. Each door is a 1 3/4 thick solid core exterior prehung door. I special ordered them because the dimensions were not standard and also so I could get 4 of the heaviest duty hinges I could (instead of 3) to hold the Xtra weight. Then I put 1/4" MLV (I know, I know), then 1/2" plywood. These are heavy as fuck. I set those layers in from the edge so I could stagger the gap and use that space for neoprene stripping on the door frame.

The video below shows the sound blockage. The monitors are fairly loud in that video but not TOTALLY cranked. Back in January, I was recording doom guitar overdubs going out of 4 50-100watt half stacks simultaneously and with the doors fully closed, you could just barely hear it from 5 feet away. Same thing when i went to reamp the bass. I honestly didn't expect this much reduction from my build and was pleasantly surprised. Obviously there are many other factors involved but the doors were always my biggest fear.

My friend owns the former Room and Board studio in Nashberg. As I recall the booth doors are actually 2 fairly heavy doors that have a gasket of some sort to glue them together. Maybe not the prettiest thing, but probably pretty effective.

Sound escapes through openings ..no matter how small. Seal off, tape up, block all gaps and openings.
