Newbie wants to play samples off a windows computer

Hi Kind Folks,

My daughter wants to experiment with playing samples off her computer via her midi keyboard controller. I don't know the first thing about this, I intentionally steered clear of midi in the 80's (and since) because it just seemed super complicated and like a vast arena in which to spend money on constant gear upgrades.

So, can someone explain to me what she needs hardware-wise and software-wise? A steer to a good article or video on the subject would be great. How to try this most cheaply and easily is my question, I suppose.

I'm sorry I don't know enough about this to ask a more focused question.

I have one of these:

pretty simple (I did have to load drivers in Windows). So as long as your keyboard has midi, then this gets it to the computer via a USB port. Then you have to configure the software to use it -- so that can be where it gets more complicated. probably need to know more about what software you are using? most DAW software supports midi

Does she have a Mac or PC? If a Mac, GarageBand is best bet. On PC options are varied. FruityLoops is a pretty good option.

I've also been playing with this. It's pretty powerful but might be a bit much for a beginner. The price is right though.

Doesn't every midi controller keyboard made in the last 15 years send MIDI out of both a MIDI port and USB port?

As for software to do this, I'm interested as well. I use ableton LIVE for this but I'm sure there are simpler options as well.
