correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the only direct drive units are the Tascam 238, Akai MG614, and Audio-Technica RMX64.

it is not, it is belt drive. same transport as the 488. common misconception. you can look in the manual and see the capstan motor is different from the 238.

i did too that's why i went on the journey trying to discover it. but manuals state DC Servo Capstan Motor for 688, whereas 238 is FG Servo DD Capstan Motor. DD for direct drive. I don't know what the difference between FG and DC servo is, but suffice to say the Specifications page is the answer to my questions.
