For anyone who's interested, and Bookfaces, there's an FB group called Portastudio and Other 4-Track Cassette Recorders (though they do cover 6 and even 8 tracks as well).

The MD44 (the grey one not the black D version) was my first recorder. Came with a terrible mixer, patch bay, cassette storage box and terrible powered speakers all in one convenient, giant package. I clocked so many hours on that thing as a teenager.

What's the difference between these sleek black ones and the original grey version?

In terms of features, looking at the front panel there I'd say just the digital counter. The grey version has the old style roller counter. My counter never worked very well.

Was that built into a sort of console made of IKEA-grade laminated MDF? A friend had a rig like that, actually gigged with it playing his backup tracks. When the MDF started breaking apart we managed to attach it all the components together (with Velcro) into a big cube.A.David.MacKinnon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 5:06 amThe MD44 (the grey one not the black D version) was my first recorder. That's the one. In fairness the mixer did have a good/terrible reverb built in. Seemed like a bucket brigade delay with the repeats turned up.Scodiddly wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 12:08 pmWas that built into a sort of console made of IKEA-grade laminated MDF? Back in the day we were not as easily amused by crappy analog reverbs, because it was that or a spring.A.David.MacKinnon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 12:29 pmIn fairness the mixer did have a good/terrible reverb built in. Seemed like a bucket brigade delay with the repeats turned up.
