Newb appreciation

Post by losthighway » Tue Nov 03, 2020 11:12 am

I was just thinking about how some folks who haven't been around as long, or are self described novice engineers have been asking some broad, basic technique questions and I feel like it's revitalized this place. I've been on other forums where if you dare to mention a topic that's been discussed they tell you to 'use the search function' and the conversation is dead.

I've enjoyed sharing, and even more reading some of the known quantities on here talking about some of the important choices we make on every session. Issues of mic'ing a kit, checking for phase relationships, choosing mic types, placing players.... all that stuff stays interesting to me, otherwise I wouldn't want to do this anymore.

Also, I like how no one is preaching about how you need to save for a Neve, or you should probably give up.

Nice work TOMB.

The greatest "old guy" advice anyone can give is to do great work while staying within your means. A Neve would be nice but rent and food will serve you better in the long run.
Nice gear is useless if you go broke chasing it.

Been here since 05ish and honestly these are the discussions I still need and appreciate the most. This place has certainly evolved over the years but it's always seemed novice friendly/accessible.

I have been thrilled at the responses to my questions and feel like I am learning so much from some really knowledgeable people. There is always so much to learn and that's one thing I love about recording. Plus this gives me a great forum, as my wife is tired of hearing about this shit.

yeah this is one of the few places on the internet filled with good people willing to lend an ear, a hand, or an idea. that's probably why i read threads that have nothing to do with stuff i do or will do, i simply enjoy the learning and banter on here!

I have never minded answering "noob" questions over and over. Sometimes, as we get better, or we get better equipment / cheaper, the answers to problems evolve or change, so it is nice to be able to revisit basic things every now and then.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Yes, our old friend Jeff Robinson famously charged $35/song to listen and critique your mix. I don't know if he ever had any takers on that offer.

Styles change, then they change back. There will never be the One True Way to mic a kick drum.

If only there was another way to spend $35 to make your recording better...
