Josephson C705 + Lauten Atlantis

Does anyone out there have experience with both of these mics? I'm curious to hear some "compare and contrast" thoughts.

I've read every review I can find, so I'm familiar with the basics (Lauten has crazy versatility with different modes, Josephson is a less expensive take on super high-end Josephsons). I'm more curious about the character, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

what do you plan to use it with/for? do you need the multi-pattern of the Lauten? are these the only 2 mics you are considering?

I did indeed spend time with both of those reviews. Andy's review of the Lauten was pretty hard to ignore!

I have the Josephson on order, but if it doesn't work out, I'll definitely return it and try the Lauten.

To answer your question, they are the two mics I narrowed down to (after researching and obsessing over this for months). My need is for an all-around mic that can do pretty much anything--but especially vocals (my own), acoustic guitar, and electric guitar (335 through an AC30).

To be honest, the comment at the end of the TO review on the Josephson about headroom is what really stuck in my head. So much gear feels so stuffed and up against its own limits all the time. I want something that feels like it has headroom built in. I know that doesn't necessarily make technical sense, but it's a feeling I'm after.

(Plus, I guess I just want to own a Josephson!)

The versatility of the Lauten with its various EQ curves was super tempting though. For somebody with a very limited amount of gear, that's hard to ignore. We'll see how things progress around here...

and I still have to say it's one of the best mics I've used on vocals or acoustic guitars (didn't get a chance to try on electric much yet as the pandemic hit..). But so easy to get it to sit in a mix with almost no EQ. but it's not a big name so only a very few are hip to it so far.

That mic maker definitely has my attention. And the tube mic is reasonably enough priced that I might add it to my collection on a whim. Thanks for chiming in; I'd forgotten about that mic (and that review). I dig your writing.
