Just don't bother to buy the wax ring. I mean there's bound to be some shit coming out of the speakers at some point, but you don't need a proper gasket.

for those concerned with weight of sand or whatever in the stands, I wonder if you could fill the tubes with something like this:

the blown-in insulation - that kind that is all shredded - shouldn't be too difficult to get it inside the hollow space and would not weigh a lot. So it should keep the hollow pvc tube (or wood cavity) from resonating, but what I think you would lose is the rigidity of the tube/column with all of the sand in it. I imagine it will move/vibrate less with the extra mass. anyone ever try it?

Guys just trust me, you can buy a bag of sand at the Depot, pour it in with a funnel, there's no mess. You can move them yourself. I weigh 145 pounds and none of that is muscle, I can move mine without much trouble.

I've been through every DIY combo around. Stacked cinder/breeze block, PVC, threaded steel pipe. And mediocre-to-modest commercial stuff...some flimsy QuikLoks that might as we have been spring loaded, a set of mid-grade Target stands.

Having just upgraded to some monster monitors, I needed appropriately stable stands to match. I found a guy on CL who was selling a stack of 3x3" heavy wall steel tubing, and my metal-fab bass player turned it into these:

33 inches tall, maybe 120 pounds before sand. They will need some sand, to shift the center of gravity backwards a bit.
"What fer?"
"Cat fur, to make kitten britches."
