the short version. neumann u87, bass rolloff switch engaged, pop filter, close miking (6" to 1 foot), dead room.
i listen to a lot of NPR, it does sound nice and cut through well.

They've also got notch vocal talent, who could probably make a dictaphone sound like NPR.
Our local NPR has hired some younger reporters/announcers through the years, and it's interesting hearing them learn that carefully metered NPR diction.

Aren't they basically using the grandson of hitler mic for the same reasons? Not comparing their missions in any way. I read that as start with an amazing mic and then don't fuck up the sound after that.
