here's a couple pictures of the ways I use the Primeacustic isolation shield. I bought it from someone that lost the proper parts to mount it to a mic stand so I put it on this cymbal stand - which gives it much more flexibility in positioning. But I still don't think it will help as much as using a different mic (like has now been stated here a million times).

Yes .. a barrier, almost anything between you mic and guitar below, its awkward at first not seeing your pickin' hand, but should get the job done.

If "dead strings" means old and worn, then no.
Flats are acoustically more quiet than wound? I've never tried them. I'm gonna grab a pack and try that....

Tho not fig 8, the SM7 and RE20 seem like good picks, as they're dynamic and also good for low frequency sources.. killing two birds w one stone.
Last summer I was going to buy the T12 (a FET LDC w/ capsule similar to C12) from Microphone Parts, but life happened and I needed the cash for bills, etc. U47 and U84 like capsules are also offered; the C12 is the most well rounded out of the 3.

The 520 is more akin to an RE20 (pretty sure that's why it's got a *20 in the name). Billet-machined son-of-a-gun.
For an inexpensive fig-8, keep an eye open for the MXL ribbons. They're the MF deal-of-the-day occasionally, I think under $100 when they pop up.

The 520 is pretty cool, like a SM7b but somehow not quite as thick-sounding.
I go between 'em for bass amps, altho' I hadda fix the 520's wires twice over the years.
