RE-20 windscreen

Post by standup » Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:36 pm

The stand my RE-20 was on took a dive, and when it hit the floor the front windscreen popped off.

I'm having trouble getting it back in. There's a bit of a flange on the edge of the windscreen, but t doesn't seem to fit.

Is there a "trick" that can be described?

I was trying to use a pair of channel locks to squeeze it in, but it just keeps popping out on another area.

FWIW I did eventually get this back together. Days later. Every time I walked in the room I’d spend a few minutes getting the windscreen anchored on one side of the opening, then trying to get the opposite side in. Channel lock pliers helped, but now there are some nicks in the finish. I got this mic used, it’s rather old, and I had it refurbished by EV last year, so it sounds like it should. It had much more high end when I got it back.

I kinda hate tripod mic stands.

I have a 320, so no issues with that.

But I have the same issues with old EV's like 664's and such, with that fancy little brass screw in the middle of the screen, what screen always goes out of round and pops the slot* ...

* what sounds like it could be a Country Dick Montana or Nashville Pussy song**

As a matter of interest, what is the going rate for an EV RE20 refurb these days? I have one with a dead capsule sitting in a drawer and I am debating whether to repair it or bin it.

And, yes, cheap tripod stands suck with heavy mics like the RE20. Sandbags are your friend...

Bosch, the parent company, sent me a bill for $249. It’s a flat fee regardless of what they have to do.

Thanks. Probably worth my while, even with shipping and Canadian $ exchange rate factored in.
