Is this a triggered snare sound?

Post by vvv » Sat Oct 30, 2021 2:22 pm

I love these guys, and he's really playing, but is the snare a triggered sample?

Just seems so un-dynamic and HPF'd or band-passed.

It sounds un-natural.

And mebbe its' heavily gated?

Sounds overcompressed.

And the EQ on it is weird.

But the song is cool, so who cares.

it's a tuned kinda low and very muffled or heavily gated snare - or probably both - which may or may not be the same one in the video.

Seems quite possible that it's triggered. You can bounce around the video and it pretty much sounds the same. Even the best players have some variation...

I really like the band but would have considered sampled drums kinda against their hippie/jammy aesthetic, and including in context of the "at home" video.

I'm also trying to decide if the BV's (the guitarist and keys guy are singing) are not only heavily-effected, but sample-augmented on this:

The drums on their last albums are either insanely processed, edited and / or sample enhanced - they are tight and consistent to a crazy level. It's never been a sound that was like "dudes in a room" :)

I think this live video is just a continuation of that. I think it is live but lots of processing to create the overall tone. That kind of snare sound isn't actually impossible to get with a well tuned supraphonic or something like that ... the width of the snare bed and tuning go a long way to creating that GUSHHHY kind of sound. It probably is gated/compressed though.

Hard to tell if it is or not. Singing seemed live though.

Well, compression, delay, hard-pass filters, some kinda gated reverb and distortion - or else it's a triggered sample added - that sounds processed to me.
