Mic Stand & Cable Organizer Wall

Post by The Scum » Sun Jul 10, 2022 1:26 pm

So the topic of storing mic stands and cables has come up a number of times through the years. I thought I'd share the solution I recently came up with for the new space.

I call it a "tack wall," after the section of wall you'd have in a stable where you'd find your equestrian accessories hanging.

I've got a bit of a recess on one wall between a framed-in post and some diffusers, so i wanted this contraption to not protrude past those, and to have enough storage for a studio's worth of cables and stands, all in easy reach. With the tool clips, a tripod mic stand with the legs collapsed fits right in, and it easy to grab when needed.

It's made of locally harvested beetle-kill ponderosa, a mix of 1x4 and 1x8. The cable hooks were custom welded from rebar, and the mic stands are attached with Arthur Platt tool clips (toolclip.com if you're interested - if ordering form them, I'd recommend calling on the phone rather than trying to order online. They make nifty little spring steel clips, but the website is somehow an offshoot of the Thomas register...my orders literally had handwritten invoices, and the payment was processed by Thomasnet.com...)

Excellent!

I use just some wall-mounted coat hooks, 12 per plate and I have two:

I also have one of these relatively expensive dealios:
https://www.amazon.com/Gator-Frameworks ... ref=sr_1_7

And I use about 4 of these cheap ones:
https://www.amazon.com/AMAPON-Accordion ... ef=sr_1_39

Then I have a over-the-door towel rack that I made some hooks for outta coat hangars, etc.

They are spread between two rooms which are currently too messy to photograph.

Mic stands in the bedio (~ 6) are just leaned against a bass cab and the wall in the corner they make. I have another half dozen inna Army duffel in the garage.

But yers - that's art! :worthy:

See? Now I have to do this to one of my studio walls.

Good job.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

This thread is very timely! I was just about to order some 1” wooden dowels to craft my own cable pegs and now I think I might just use the garage organizer hook stuff (instead of having rebar bent to my needs.)

Thanks for posting the source for those clips! I’m gonna look them up!

Looks great. I’m in a basement with open rafters. The music side has rock wool between the joists, but elsewhere mic stands go up in between the joists. Patch cables are on a cable hanger, mic cables are in a drawer, each in its own gallon ziploc bag, no tangles.
