I’m thinking about this, maybe try it this weekend.
I put up a Stager SR2N ribbon over the kit for a mono overhead. Dark, focused sounding.
I’m thinking about putting Omni Oktava 012’s on the rack and floor Tom for a bit of stereo on fills. And they’ll be right under the crash and ride for stereo.
Anyone done this? The balance might be completely unworkable, I’m gonna try it and see what I get.

Re: Omnis on toms
I think it will be really player dependent whether it works or not. Even directional mic, if panned will give you some stereo spread when used with your mono overhead.
What's your reasoning for omni, is it for the cymbal bleed? Close tom mics really benefit from proximity effect IMHO and using omni will kill that.

I’ll have to try both heads. Yeah, hoping to get the full cymbal sound with an Omni underneath.
But good points too, proximity effect and I’m going to get the cymbals in cardioid anyway.

Hell yes to the title. If it works, of course. I consider such when there's no cymbal height and it's a cymbal basher, and a cardioid is essentially ineffective, maybe worse.

Re: Omnis on toms
Omnis only when you are going to love the bleed from all the other percussions from the kit going into that microphone.
And zero proximity effect on the tom itself.

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
Re: Omnis on toms
gonna get the cymbals anyway......point being they will suck less with omni than an unavoidable cardioid bleed position. If ANYTHING's gonna be unavoidable heavy bleed, chuck the cardioids in the trash and go (real pressure) omni, I always say, and do, and am glad I did. Nothing more unmanageable than shitty cardioid bleed IMO, especially with cymbals. Of course, it's not always that way.
