My two-tone m160

Post by standup » Tue Sep 06, 2022 10:27 am

I’ve had this mic for decades. It’s etched “ORTF”, as it apparently once belonged to the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française. I only have one, so can’t use it in ORTF pattern. Matte silver. “Made in W. Germany”.

When I got it it had ORTF’s proprietary Sogie connector on it. So I screwed that off and for years it had an XLR on a short pigtail, held in place with electrical tape. So very pro.

The mic lost its low end, picked up very little under 150 hz, so I sent it to Beyerdynamic for repair and asked them to put the standard XLR connector on it. Which they did. It’s black, as are all Beyerdynamic mics that I’ve seen recently. But it looks better and will be easier to deal with now.

I got it back this morning, and haven’t heard it yet. But I’m assuming it will sound good again.

Tried to attach a photo, but it says “Board attachment quota has been reached”. Is that my quota, or are attachments not working now?

It’s your personal limit. I’ve had to go through and delete old pics in order to post new ones. I get having a limit, but it would be nice if it weren’t so, ummm……limiting.

Congrats! Do you mind me asking what the repair cost and how long it took?

It was about a 3-week round trip, not bad. And my job, including replacing the xlr input, was about $350. If you just need the ribbon motor done I’m sure it would be less.

They replace all the guts now. You essentially are getting a brand new mic when you send it in for service. Apparently the difficulty of re-ribboning them is not worth it so they don't do that.

Mine took a spill a while back and it dented the grill. It seems fine, but I’m worried it might be off just because it took the hit. It’s sounds fine I think, I might just be paranoid, and it might not be the little delicate flower I was led to believe it was. That dent tho…

Is there a spot where we can slip a dollar into the cloudhosting tip jar, to help relax the restrictions?

If they're repairing M160's again, this is news! They were not for the longest time.

On the Beyer site I was referred to:

Consolidated Sound Services LLC
341 Schoolhouse Road, MA, United States, 01026
service@consolidatedsoundservices.com

They are indeed servicing m160's.

Clarence Kane does it too. I emailed him about it last year. Different ribbon but he said "I've had no complaints"

Samar was the only party doing original piston ribbons.

I have a pair of the Samar Al95's that have the piston ribbon design. I'm sure they are totally different sounding than an M160 (I've never owned or used one) but the AL95's are great mics.

I wasn't aware that Marik was still doing repairs? I know he is really busy with Samar, which is great to see!

I had a cache of NOS Beyerdynamic ribbons for a short period, but people jumped on it, and alas they are all gone.

Most of the M160 reribbons I do these days are the alnico version, as Beyer swaps out the motor for the newer neodymium style motors when they do the repairs. The newer M160 motors with neo's are brighter, and higher output than the alnico version, in my experience.

I use a traditional style ribbon in my repairs, and feel they are on par or better than the original ribbon.

You should be able to order a replacement top grill from Beyerdynamic, if it's real bad.

I'm often able to roll out dents if they aren't "OMG what the hell happened here" bad. =)

Wish granted, I upped the limit (I think). Give it a whirl
