Please recommend some small but mighty speakers

Post by Snarl 12/8 » Mon Dec 19, 2022 3:59 pm

Hi Folks,

My daughter needs speakers smaller than my KRK V8's that I'm loaning her. I'm wondering if anyone knows of some small speakers (5-6" woofers?) that might give the KRK V8's a run for their money sound-wise. These would be mostly used for keyboard practice and listening back to rough recordings. They don't need to be flat monitors, in fact I'd rather they sound "good" than flat.

Any ideas?

Right now I'm in love with the JBL Classic 52's, which I'm sure rock like crazy, but they are about twice what I was hoping to pay.

Thanks,

ck

I think the Sonodyne SRP 400's would be exactly "small but mighty". They're the smallest in the SRP line but many say sound the hugest. And they can be had for pretty cheap lately

The Presonus Eris line is worth a listen.

I wound up putting on my mask and going into Guitar Center and listening to their switcher thing with all the nearfields on it. It wasn't a great selection, maybe 12 different pairs, and they had speakers for sale that weren't on it, but it gave me a sampling of what was out there, minus any of the selections mentioned by you folks.

I wound up going with the KRK 5 inch dealios for about $300. They just sound super solid to me, for their size. They have crazy dsp on the back, I think, to dial in their sound. Maybe I'm just used to KRK's?

We'll see how they do. Thanks for the input. If this wasn't so last minute I would have tried harder to audition your suggestions. I'm really lacking the christmas spirit this year, but I keep telling myself this is for her birthday, the day after christmas.

Thanks again.

PS Mask use is really picking up out here in Portland, OR. I'd say about a third of people were masked in stores tonight, it was good to see.

I like my JBL 3 series speakers. 5" woofer. Cheap, accurate enough.

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I'd have recommended these for this need. Those KRKs are like the sm57 of monitors. Useful, cheap, ubiquitous, predictably colored in sound. There are so many better monitors for more $ but so many applications where you don't need something better than their reliable 'pretty good'. I had to triple the cost to justify taking out my Rokit 8s and that was after a decade of use.

No MB for me.

I mean, I can just imagine drinking too much at a jam and puking from looking at the Markbass rig; I did jam with a guy who had one a cuppla years ago - worse looking cab ever IMNSFHO, just because of that caution yellow. And it mighta just been him, but I found it loud and dynamic-less, kinda sterile.

My Markbass cab sits in a room that's painted bright yellow, probably not suitable for sensitive eyes.
Sounds like a bass cab.
