The other possibility, is the intonation of the instrument being off...
Nope, it's a Taylor and the intonation is dead-nuts on. Also middle D on my piano gives the same 4 cents off. Also if I tune my guitar up with the Peterson and play a chord, the D is definitely out of tune even when it's the open string in the chord.

I do tune pianos as a hobby, so I'm reasonably sure I have higher standards now than a lot of other tuner users. 8)
What are you using for piano's? Trying to recall what my tuning guy uses, don't see it in a quick scan of piano tuning app$$$.

We go back to my original post - I was using "AP Tuner" which is orphaned and did not survive the last big iOS upgrade.
EDIT: I still have it working on a couple older phones and an iPad which haven't gotten the big update.

Real piano technicians spend hundreds of dollars on a tuning app. The big one is "CyberTuner", which goes for a cool $999.99 *and* has in-app purchases.   So that's sort of your ProTools of tuner apps. I'm looking for something more on a Reaper budget.

Well then it sounds like the app is not tracking correctly. And that sucks.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Crisis somewhat averted as I picked up an old iPad 2nd generation for $20. The AP Tuner is not available for purchase on the Apple app store, but it was still available for download since I'd already bought it. Yay! A reason to hoard all my old iPhones, too.
