Thread Size Around XLR Barrel on Condenser Mics

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Thu Feb 16, 2023 9:44 am

This is a bit of an oddball question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Does anyone know the thread size for the threaded area outside the xlr barrel on a condenser or off-shore ribbon mic? On a condenser it's the part where you unscrew the base of the body to access the internals. On mics like the Apex ribbons or some Blue condensers its also used to attach the mic to the shock mount.
I just picked up a few of those cheap-o monoprice active ribbons and would like to use my Octava shock mounts with them. To do that I'll need a nut that will screw over this thread.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would just contact each mic manufacturer.
Otherwise you may not get the right info online.

Is there a Fastenal location near you? The one in my area has helped me a few times with this sort of thing as they have the gauges, calipers etc necessary to determine what size it is.

unfortunately there is no standard for that. I have several different mics that have several different sizes of threads in the shockmounts -- and as you guessed - they won't interchange and fit with one another. So I ended marking them all with a black or silver sharpie so I can quickly locate the correct match. it's also going to be a specialty part - that really flat, but round knurled nut. you might be able to get them somewhere but you will need to know the width and thread count.

mostly what you will find are 5/8-27 (to fit a mic stand) - https://www.frontendaudio.com/latch-lake-jam-nut-black/

I've for sure seen mics/shockmounts with M20, M21, and M22 threads. by the time you get done sourcing the nut, you may find it cheaper to just pickup the whole mount. And you can get a digital Caliper on amazon for under $10 now - to measure the width (still might have to guess on the threads though). My old analog caliper still works but geez, under $10?

^^^
Mike is spot-on. They're all different. From mics I have owned, I know a Neumann TLM103 and an MXL v69 and a Shure KSM 44 all have different threads. I assume with calipers and a thread gauge you could determine if they are at least standard metric sizes...

Thanks guys. This has been a really helpful start. The screw on clip from my baby bottle fits as does the ring/nut/whatever you call it from my Apex 205 ribbon. Looking at the Shinybox mics on Jon's instagram page the body appears to be similar or maybe the same (?) as the 205 so Jon's 22mm info is probably a safe place to start.

It's a safe bet that any Chinese mic thread stuff will be metric.

For my mics, this is the replacement shockmount I send people towards:

Ha - I love the single review comment on that mount. Underlines the discussion here. but that mount looks exactly like several others I have too. And can't beat the price.
