Rudy Van Gelder website - gear & history galore

Post by biasvoltage » Tue Feb 21, 2023 7:34 pm

I just spent a fascinating couple of hours reading the entirety of the Rudy Van Gelder Legacy website.

Lots of pics and information about the living room studio and the larger facility he built in 1960, and insights from the musicians and people he worked with. Even if you're not into jazz, the gear pron alone is worth a look. Fairchild 660 serial #1!

thank you. fascinating that the studio was constructed without an acoustician or modern sound treatment/proofing. cinderblock sides, concrete floor, cedar planking ceiling with douglas fir beams. and yet the results are legendary.

that hammond c3 is glorious, such history

Thanks for the link. It was great to go down the RVG rabbit hole for an hour or so.

Glad I found this - thanks for posting! 20+ years ago I remember searching the web for RVG info and you couldn't even find photos of the studio, let alone how it was constructed, so that's a great read.

And ooooooOOOOOOOWWWEEEEEE! Those Grady Tate drums at the start of this Jimmy Smith outtake!! Dropping the heavy half-time funk break like nobody's business, and nothing like the take on the LP. If I were still a sampling man .... ;)
