sm7b died help!

Today it stopped passing audio - I did all the obvious stuff - swapped cables, pres etc... opened it up at the jack and inside to look for any obvious broken connections or cold solder joints - it all looks totally fine.

what CAN die component wise in a mic like this? I would love to get it repaired if possible but local techs have $125 minimums now just to look at it and give a quote so I also don't want to put $200 into a mic I can replace for $300....

I would definitely check with Shure first, they have a great repair system and reasonably quick turnaround (better than a lot of mic companies!).

will have to track down some contact info. I've had this mic for ages so it won't be a warrantee thing.

did you try the switches (under the rear cover plate - if you still have it attached) - maybe just move them back and forth a couple times?

yes - worked the switches. it doesn't seem like a contact issue - there's not even a whisp of audio passing through, it's actually super weird!

Since it is "totally dead" I suspect a capacitor. How old is this microphone?

In any case, if you don't have extensive electronics repair experience, send it in to Shure. They'll fix it right up.

According to the schematic, there's one capacitor in the SM7b, in the presence boost circuit. You say you worked the switches with no change, so it's unlikely to be that cap.

Shure have a flat-fee repair policy - for an SM7b, it's $180. It sounds spendy, but when I've used that service on other mics in the past, I'm pretty sure they were sending back brand-new mics.

The other option would be to disassemble it and poke around...maybe some of those tiny lil' wires are broken.

I'd suggest taking it apart to see if the problem is something simple. You can't break it if it's already broken. If you still can't get it working, send it to Shure. I have an SM7 that still works perfectly, after all these years, so I seriously doubt yours has died from old age.

i took it to my tech and he says the voice coil is open and he can't repair it.
