Active Noise Canceling Headphones for the Plane?

Post by Snarl 12/8 » Sun Aug 06, 2023 2:24 am

Hi,

It looks like there's some travel coming up for me. The last trip I took my Sony 7506's hoping the isolation would give me a nice oasis to listen to some music and watch some content on the plane. The engine noise really cut through I couldn't really hear any nuance in the music or really enjoy a movie or show that much. Has anyone been really impressed on a plane with anything in the under $250 range? I think I want full on headphones and not earbuds unless they ARE corded.

Thanks very much,

ck

I use a pair of monoprice anc headphones and they work very well (at least as well as any name brand I have used). I most recently took them to Croatia, and I also used them in my hotel room because my mom snores…

This is what I have: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=41232

I've got a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b and I can't stand them. They are so bass hyped it drives me crazy. Just pure mud. uggh. So I do not recommend...

So I tend to just use standard ear-buds (not even active noise cancelling, but with the silicone inserts) -- the isolation is better and they work OK. My only complaint with earbuds is that I feel like every so often I have to re-insert them, especially as my ears "pop" when adjusting to altitudes/pressure of the cabin. way under $250.

I have a pair of custom molded IEM earbuds, great on planes.

How about a woodshop / gun range headset over a pair of regular earbuds, though? You definitely need to some bulk attenuation, airplanes are like 80-90dB broadband noise.

I have a pair of Airpods Pro. They have a switchable noise cancelling feature. Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, and Off.

The active one was excellent are removing nearly all the busy airport terminal noise. LAX and the Tennessee airport.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

A sound tech acquaintance offered me his Valco VMK20 for a quick test. I found them surprisingly good. They're pretty cheap, and actually sound better with the noise cancelling switched on. Wired or Bluetooth operation.

hello
when someone next to you snores and you wear these, you cannot hear their snoring at all?

I wanted to buy the Monoprice, but they wouldn't arrive in time, so I got the Anker Soundcore Q30's. I think they were the best reviewed ANC headphones in my price range on Amazon.

They weren't perfect, some bluetooth dropouts, sound a little hollow sounding (but I totally forgot to fuck with the EQ in the app).

But I am so happy I got them. They provided the little acoustic oasis I was looking for. 9/10 recommend.
