I'd say Coles 4038 as well. But yeah, pricey. The first time I put up a pair I couldn't believe how big and full the toms sounded. No close mics required.

Ribbons are really good for that type of capture. They pick up the beefy toms in a really different way than condensers.

Get 3 because when I use my pair for OH's, I miss having one for guitar.
