For recording, my first choice is a Milab dc-196; barring that, a ribbon: m130 or R121; also have gotten good results with the C414B-ULS.

For live stuff, a KMS105 is usually first choice, but RE20 is good, too.

Be a bit out in front of and above the bell, aiming across it at the keys. Don't let them stick the mic IN the bell.
I heard they inserted a Jimmy Hendrix into the chain somewhere before the preamp.

...Anybody know what that preamp was, 'cause I'd also love to get that sound.
