Best time to move the gear into a new neighborhood-

Post by radmike » Wed Mar 24, 2004 8:19 am

So i'm moving my studio, I have loads of original boxes for the gear and i plan on carefully boxing or milk-crating the other gear into the new basement location. It's only a 15 minute drive away. Its in a busier part of the city and i didnt want to advertise the fact that I'm moving in with thousands of dollars worth of equiptment. I was thinking covert op. cover up any boxes displaying the product and box the good looking stuff- move the gear in right before the sun comes up - 5 or 6 oclock in the morning.

what would you do?

after each box, make sure the neighbors see you walk in with your box labelled "sawed off shot gun" or "bazooka"

Or maybe label one "nosy neighbor appendages".

Moving in at that hour will definitely be covert, but it may also seem suspicious to police. A simple explanantion should get you out of that situation though.

Another problem with moving in during the day though could be your own actions while moving in. If it were me I'd be looking around constantly making sure noone is eyeballing me. Which is suspicious behavior in itself.

I'm sorry. I'm no help.

When I moved my studio, it was about 10PM. I covered racks and things with packing/moving blankets and didn't use many original boxes. The stuff that was obvious and large, I moved with several people around to obscure what it was we were moving. I think the main thing to watch for is later when you start inviting people to your studio. Only let people you know are legit know the location of the studio etc. I think there was a thread not long ago about security. Thanks.

Blitzkrieg style is the way to do it...

Get a bunch of your stongmen buddies, drink a beer or six and move in at 4 am, unloading all the boxes first and fastest. do it like a focused operation, definite the initiative and go for it. i have moved studios from apt to apt and basement to basement and this is the most effective. get your shit inside when nobody is around except bread and newspaper delivery men, maybe some night stragglers, and organize later. thats how to do it.

good luck radmike

I suggest lots of smoke Bombs. Or mabye you could hire David Blane???

I had this just this year. we moved into an apartment and met one of our neighbors. We started talking to him and it turned out he went to prison for three years when he "caught the case." He never told us what he went to prison for. Anyway, my bandmate is all, "oh yeh, you should see paul's studio in his room, we record all our stuff." So then he goes and shows him all my shit. I couldn't believe it. When ever I left town for the weekend. I was usually driving about 5,000 worth of equip and mic's with me just because I thought that dude would rob me. Then I got renters insurance and nothing ever happened. Yet I was pissed.

I'd say move it in at 4:30 AM. If the cops come, tell them you are ditching a body.

this won't help you, but i remember when i moved into my current house... the middle school aged kids outside on their bikes kept making fun of me the whole time. "oooh, keyboard, what a fag!" i was like.. ummm ok? "what kind of loser has so many guitars?" ... "only dorks play the drums! haha!" ... "more keyboards, what are you going to be, the next gaythoven?", stuff like that. every time i came outside they continued to bother and yell at me...

to this day i still really have no idea why. i guess they were jealous? kids...

Trick i learnt from my mother: mark the boxes with things like 'rick's clothes', 'samantha's clothes', 'garage stuff', etc etc ...and obviously bag those original boxes. Happy moving!
