Re: has anyone used the smokey amp
i LOVE the smokey amps. i got one almost a year ago. still works great. pretty tough to play clean...but an amazing deal for $25!! there were some really old threads on different uses for the smokey amp. put 'em over a glass of water, stick them in a can. whirl them around on a string, etc. for different effects. i got an almost banjo like tone out of this amp and an electric guitar i got at a thrift store...also got some amazing overdriven guitars with the amp itself, and as a preamp for my music man amp...amazing little bugger that smokey amp...
just don't take it with you on the plane...took my guitar and this on a flight recently...took me twenty minutes to explain..."no it's not a bomb i made out of a pack of cigarettes...it's a guitar amp."

Re: has anyone used the smokey amp
these are pretty cool amps as amps, but what i really love them for is troubleshooting patch bays and signal chains. "ok, no signal, does it get to here? yes? what about here?" etc...
nice, lite, battery powered...

I've said it on here before, but I'll say it again. Here's my personal favorite Smokey amp trick: Get the plastic case version (rather than ciggie pack version) and stick the speaker end IN YOUR MOUTH! Beats any wah wah pedal or Frampton-ish Talk Box you've ever tried!

Re: has anyone used the smokey amp
Another pro Smokey vote here.
I just finished mixing a tune that has a Smokey featured on it. The tune has kind of a revved up ZZTop riff. We used the Smokey on the intro and a break in the middle so that once your ears get used to this sputtering crappy guitar sound, the real guitars kick in and sound gigantic by comparison.
I also use it to beef up the sound of sampled and electronic drums. It fattens up the low end and seems to compress in a pleasing (albeit noisy) way. I'll adjust the output of the Drum Machine or what have you to govern the amount of beef and distortion added to the signal
It's defintily one of those cheap gizmos that is worth having around as it will creep it's way into sessions again and again

Re: has anyone used the smokey amp
Yes! definitely worth the $
i have 2 - one original (Merit hard box) & one Plastic.
The orignals are cool to fool people into thinking you still actually smoke ciggies - but they get beat up fast.
SOUND:
======
I use mine thru an ampeg bass cab - sounds wicked - a pal freaked when he heard how HUGE it sounded.
TRICK:
=====
try taking a small BB or screw and laying on top of the speaker cone. instant Ring-mod!

Yeah, I've got one that a client of mine gave me as a gift. It's pretty cool, if not sort of a one-trick pony, tone-wise. You can still do some fun and cool things with it. The "talk box" trick that Slim Bilt mentioned totally works, too.

The little battery-powered mini-Marshall is cool like that as well.
