How to get balanced signals into unbalanced gear?

Post by shedshrine » Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:59 pm

Trying to get balanced gear to play nice with an electrix repeater. Is there some converter box or adaptor for this? I've got a balanced patchbay, and I dont' want to have to route through a mixer if possible. Is it worth trying to get someone to convert the repeater to balanced I/O? Thanks.

this is a good way to mate those puppys :

http://www.ebtechaudio.com/lls-2des.html

there are three ways to wire if your not going to use that box depending on the output stage(s) of your balanced gear:

http://www.vandenhul.com/artpap/wiring4.htm

you will lose 6db of gain with out the matcher box which can be ok or can cause minor problems like increased noise floor.

hope this helps.

the 6db's of make up gain you need to apply..not a huge deal but every little bit helps..also i hear that a cross-coupled balanced output wired with a floating ground can cause a lot of bad things to happen..and inverting op-amps dont take kindly to grounding the unused lead in a cable..this is just what im told by some geeks..maybe some one here more technically inclined can give you the reasons why..because im not really sure..its all greek to me..

Poke around http://www.markertek.com, there are a bunch of little black boxes that do balanced/unbalanced and +4/-10 conversion.
