Robert Quine, RIP
Robert Quine, RIP
Robert Quine has died; I thought this would be of interest to this forum. His work w/ Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Lou Reed, & Matthew Sweet always impressed me greatly; he was a big influence.
Below are links to Billboard news report, and his website, FYI.

ah, man... damnit
Re: Robert Quine, RIP
terrible news. i was just bopping along to blank generation the other day (love comes is spurts rules!) i have become a fan of that late 70's angular guitar playing in the last few years, and he was great.
weird how in his web page address it says "~stayclean" and he died from an OD.

Ah, crap. He was a unique stylist who graces many records in my collection.

Damn - an od?? That sucks. Only 61 - that ain't really old considering my pop's is still pretty damn active at 65 - it's way too bad as he might have given us some more cool music.
For those in Brooklyn go to Photoplay in Greenpoint and rent out "Blank Generation" on DVD. While the plot is pretty thin there's some cool live shots of the Voidoid's at CB's with Robert doing some great playing as usual.
I got to see Robert live only once - at this theater in Cambridge Mass in 1987 - where he appeared in a trio doing free improvs with John Zorn and Bill Frisell. They played on a bill after the California Ear Unit - which was trying to be a hip contemporary chamber ensemble but still came off a little stiffish. When they came out Bill kind of started with a minute of these real ethereal chords, and then Zorn interuppted the tranquility with circular breathing these continous screeches while Robert Quine (in trade mark shades) pulled out these angular riffs that were just plain built to wreck shit. It was pretty classic - exciting stuff to hear back then when the vibe of the whole "downtown" NYC scene was a bit fresher.
The duet album with Fred Maher "Basic" is a definite Tape Opper classic even if the 80's drum machine is pretty silly on it - I think they recorded it at their apartments using a 4 track and just piled on the noise.
Lou's "Blue Mask" is another great one too.
We'll miss you Robert.
Best regards,
Steve Berson

Shite; he made me feel good about being a bald rocker, and about liking Matthew Sweet, too.Cellotron wrote:Lou's "Blue Mask" is another great one too.
I have been telling friends about his unfluence and under-ratedness for years.
RIP.

I just read about this on the Throwing Muses website. How sad! I only found out because of his connection with Kristin Hersh. She recorded one of his poems on his Lustro cd.

How sad!!!
I'm going to buy this... he seems really talented. I know I am a fan of several of the band she is affiliated with.

First heard him through John Zorn, then Tom Waits. A great musician who left us too early.

What a shame... a true innovator and compelling stylist and decent guy. I had the pleasure of working with him once or twice with Lloyd Cole. Very sad news...
