In heavy rotation:

Neutral Milk Hotel "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" Oh, those acoustic guitars!
Elliott Smith "XO" and "Figure 8"
The Webb Brothers "Maroon" Wide-screen, super-Technicolor Stephen Street production. Sounds huge.
Curtis Mayfield "Superfly"
The New Pornographers "Electric Version" Such a dry, clean, bouncy record.

Yeah, I think "Superfly" is incredible. It's hard to believe it was recorded so long ago. Does anyone have any insight into what kind of mics and instruments Curtis used on that record? Every sound has its own cozy little spot in the mix.

I'm still totally gooned on Fridmann & Co--that is, the latest Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Sparklehorse Records. I just cannot get sick of them. Tarbox Road is in my wife's home town, we drive past every now and then. "I wonder if the Lips are there right now?" "I dunno--ya think so?"

the latest Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev,
Two more greats. Yoshimi was wonderful. And even though I liked Deserters Songs more than the new Rev, I still thought it was an excellent album. But Deserters has Holes and Goddess on a Highway, which are two of my favorite songs by them, so it's kind of tough for them to beat (though, I used to be much more partial to Yerself is Steam and Boces--the David Baker era).

And I've always wondered how Mayfield sounded so damn nice for such an old recording. Pusherman remians my favorite song from him. And another older musician that has some amazing sound quality is Nick Drake. Five leaves left is old as mold, but it sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. Life's little mysteries.
I am wangtacular.

Chevelle's Wonder What's Next

I think it is a great example of a modern rock album that has been mastered with perfect levels. The drums sound great and there is a nice clarity to the bass guitar.

I think we should start a new thread discussing the worst professional recordings during 2002-2003. I vote Foo Fighters' One by One. I love the album, but the drum sound absolutely blows.

Shadows Fall - Art of Balance - kicks major ass in all areas.

Bear & thekingandcaroline - which Elliott Smith are you talking about? The early stuff (like XO & Either Or) or the later stuff? Just wondering cos the former is pretty lo-fi. Personally I prefer it that way every time, but I'm curious to know which way others are going on that question.

And yes - Superfly is awesome. CM finally got the ultra production he deserved on that one (cos it was an OST?).

The Fall just played here in Atlanta a few weeks ago - wow, what an amazing show. There are only a handful of bands that I've been dying to see, but never thougt I'd ever have the chance. They are one of those bands, and my expectations were quite surpassed, to say the least. It's difficult to think of another band that has been so prolific and influential over 3 decades, while still keeping it's strength intact. I'd say Pere Ubu, but they had some hit-and-miss albums - great live show, however. I may catch flack for saying so, but The Fall never recorded a bad album . . . though the argument could be made that they essentially recorded the same album in a few different variations!

Bobbydj:

I'm definitely more into Either/or and XO. I have no problems with lo-fi albums--often times I prefer them. Like in this case.

Bobbydj,

I was talking about "XO" and "Figure 8," just because I've been listening to both of them a lot lately. Of the two, I prefer "XO."

But I'm also a big fan of "Either/Or," "Roman Candle" and the self-titled disc. They've all got some great songs.
