Buddy Miller will kick your ass.
Buddy Miller will kick your ass.
I was at a show last night that featured Buddy Miller, the Cowboy Junkies and Todd Snider.
I love Todd, I've been a fan of his for about 10 years now.
The Cowboy Junkies put me to sleep. It even looks like they put them selves to sleep, with all the negative stage presence they exude. (The Trinity Sessions is a great record, but you've heard one, you've heard 'em all, IMHO.)
Buddy Miller stole the show. I love that guy. I've got a few of his CDs, but I've never seen him live. He is a national treasure.
Anybody with me on this?

... i'm with ya. he's a bad ass. a rare breed of guitar player who has the facility to play anything, but always seems to play the RIGHT thing.
i had the pleasure of opening up for buddy and julie at the aladdin in portland, or. kelly willis actually headlined the show, but buddy and julie stole it that night as well. inspiring stuff, and a hell of a nice guy from what i could gather from my brief encounter with him.

I've never met Buddy, but just from sitting in the audience, and reading about him & stuff, he exudes this Master Yoda type aura. He's a true, multi-talented musician. He's just absolutely freakishly good.
My wifey doesn't even like twangy country music, but by halfway through his first song, she was sold. When the Cowboy Junkies finished playing, about 3/4 of the audience stood up to clap (the other 1/4 were soundly sleeping), and she remarked, "why are they giving them a standing O, Buddy Miller was way better?!"
Take that, Timminses
Seriosly, Buddy is one of the greatest country musicians ever. Ever.

And his wife a looker.

Great topic
Buddy is one of the reasons that I haven't jumped in front of a train because I can't afford a Studer A-820
He does some of the fattest and most deliciously chewy sounding recordings into Pro Tools. I put his stuff on and I realize that there is hope for the future.
And I also love the songs.

Re: Buddy Miller will kick your ass.
Anyone ever see that Austin City Limits from a few years back with Buddy and Julie, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, and Dave Matthews (gee, who's the odd man out there?).
Outstanding. Buddy just had a little fender up there (never enough good tv shots of the amp!) and a couple guitars and sounding incredible. On one song, Julie backed Buddy up with drum sticks on a bucket. Some people can make anything cool.
Poor Dave Matthews. I guess this was right after Patty signed to his label. He tried to keep up but his songs had no depth compared to the others.
Then again, there aren't too many people who COULD hang in that crowd.

Weird. I just got hip to Buddy's solo stuff last night. I was mixing this alt-country thing and my clients brought in a CD of his and we listened to some of it on a break. Wow! I loved it. The balls of having the majority of your drum sound coming from a directly out-of-phase pair of mics!! Priceless. It's great stuff. I've got to pick some up.

Buddy records digital into pro tools, then runs things through a Crane Song Tape-Hedd.
Anybody worked with one of these before?

A HEDD? Yeah, they're pretty cool. Dave Harris at Studio B Mastering has one that I've played with a bit. I don't know that it really sounds like tape, but it's a cool box that can do some neat things to audio.saultime wrote:Anybody worked with one of these before?

Yeah Buddies great. I thought that he did a lot of his triacking to an old studer in his house- there was a great interview with him in the magazine a year or so ago and I thought he said he tracked a lot of stuff to the studer and then went digital after that. However he does it he's an amazing mucician and gets great sound on his records.

Re: Buddy Miller will kick your ass.
I saw him almost exactly a month ago with the Sweet Harmonies Traveling Review and was blown away. The first time I ever heard him (or heard of him for that matter) was on that Austin City Limits mentioned above. He is a fucking monster. As is David Rawlings who was also a part of the SHTR tour. Man it was fun seeing those two on stage together. Not to mention Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, and Patty Griffin.
If it sounds good, it is good.
