Looking for a good reverb unit

Post by TeleKing » Sun Nov 21, 2004 3:57 pm

I'm running a pro tools rig and I have the Waves Gold bundle. I don't like the reverbs, however.

I do a lot of acoustic stuff and dark stuff and a good reverb is essential.

I was wondering if I should go with an older Lexicon piece or if the newer stuff is important. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. I just need some great sounding reverbs.

Any suggestions on reverbs? I know Tape Op did an article awhile ago on it, but I can no longer find the issue. Any ideas?

Well you didn't specify how much you were looking to spend which is a big determining factor. I also noticed this post was drifting toward the bottom of page 1 and its only your second post. This kinda stuff gets asked quite a bit around here so you might want to use the search function at the top of the page or take a look at the 'best of thread'.

In my own personal opinion, having used mainly low and middle end fx processors, reverb is reverb. Most of the Lexicon and TC stuff has some really useable sounds, the key is in how you use them. Some are more convincing then others but if used sparingly most, even some of the low end models can produce some nice results. With that said, use the search funciton and read some reviews of units that fit your price range your willing to spend.

Might help, sorry.

I'm looking to spend around $1000 or so, maybe more because reverb is kind of crucial to some of the stuff I'm doing.

While I agree that some low dollar reverb can sound good on certain things, for what I'm doing, I think you need some high quality reverb.

I would guess Lex and TC stuff would be the stuff I'm looking for. New stuff runs around 2K, but I was wondering if I might find an older model that would suffice.

I have a lexicon lxp 1 and the reverbs are unrealistic..but I just got a BOSS se50 that sounds better...less metallic

Recorded a piano part at Marcata last weekend and one of the most interesting sounds was an EV shotgun mic placed in the hall way.

unfortunately the battery in the mic was crapping out so the track is distorted and crackly [in a bad way] the sound otherwise was amazing and totally reminiscent of brian wilson pet sounds era stuff....

so I put the BOSS on one of the tracks and re-recorded it....it comes pretty damn close [I'm certain if I fucked with it for a while longer I could get it almost exactly!]
Super 70 Studio.. Never tell a perfectionist that the mix is perfect!

Lexicon pcm-80 or 90. The Sony R7 is nice too, though a little less useable.

I'll second the PCM70, fantastic box. TC M-One is good as well.

Is there any way you can set up a speaker and a mic in the best sounding room in your house and get a chamber reberb going? This is what I do and it work really well.
The room I use is large with wooden floors and I try to do it when no one is home to avoid bothering anyone.

I found a T.C. M-2000 and a PCM-70 used. I got them both for under $1000. Maybe try to get a few different flavors of reverb?

The Lexicon 200 is really cool as far as outboard reverbs go.

here's one on ebay for $975.00

for reverb plugins, I like the Spin Audio Roomverb and i've even had some decent success the Nuendo Reverb that comes with the software.

Here's one thats better than eventide or lexicon...

three words

soldano space box...

this thing kills

1. largest accutronics tank ever built
2. completely tube power and pre
3. multiple tone controls
4. mic, line in, and instrument inputs
5. both balanced and unbalanced outs

use REAL reverb for $600 f the digital shit.
