Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
yeah, i've got an old 4-track song that for bass, i just ran my guitar through a pitch-shifter. Best terrible bass sound ever. The other favorite of the early days was the human beat-box drums. I spent long hours scewing with mouth sounds an eq to try and make a drum kit. Not to mention the fact that on several occasions there would be a different track for "kick" and "snare".

Anyone ever listen to Sebadoh's "The Freed Weed"? (Actually, that's a combination of 2 records: "the freed man" and "weed forestin"......but that's beside the point).
Anyway, that record is absolutely incredible on an emotional level (for me, anyway...) but the recording is, technically, pretty "horrible". However, if you're a fan of that recording you soon learn to overlook the fact that the gear Lou Barlow was using was VERY "limited gear". Strange/beautiful/horrible recording.
Check it out if you already haven't.

Yeah, I grew up on Sebadoh's lofi sounds. Weed Forrestin rules.
Slider, your recording sounds good. I'm always pumped when I hear a quality recording on a 388. Gives me hope. Nice drum sound. And the direct bass isn't bad either, though it sorta disapears when the big drums come in -- but maybe that's just my lousy computer speakers at the office.

Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
I think I accelerated on my learning curve once I replaced the detachable boombox speakers with Event Tr-8s. Until then, learning mic placement techniques was a useless and frustrating waste of time. I will say that I wish I hadn't waited until my late twenties before I became more interesting in recording. Buying my korg d1200 a couple years ago is the best thing that happened to my music-writing skills.

That's sweet, Jack is the Beast, I love the toms.

Bubble and Scrape is great.
I also love the velvet underground records which are pretty lousy recordings
that I love.

Yeah it's really old. 1991 to be exact.craigloom wrote:Yeah, I grew up on Sebadoh's lofi sounds. Weed Forrestin rules.

I think it was mixed to my moms VCR.
I found it on DAT.
These were some of the most enjoyable sessions I've ever done.
So quick, Drums on one track, not caring about mic pre's and stupid crap I'm worried about now.
I need to find a way to make the computer more like this.
The problem is, the bands I record for the most part want to sound like every other record out there.
Which means loud as fuck with triggered kick, and really slick.
What a drag.
I wish I could just record stuff I actually would listen to.
It makes me want to get a job and use my studio to fuck around in.
Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
Enjoyed that track, thanks.
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

Waaaaay awhile ago I used a Roland VS-880 and a single Shure condensor. I found the only thing that made my recordings stand out was listening to mic positioning and performing really well

I'm only listening over relatively crappy headphones, but that sounds pretty damn awesome!Slider wrote:Here's the 388 recording if anyone cares.
I think it's pretty cool for a couple idiots recording on a 388 in a garage for a couple hours.

It's an MP3 that is disguised as a wav file.
This free website only lets you have wav audio on them for some reason.

Hey Slider... this song reminds me of when I was headed to the drag strip to race my 69' pro stock Nova back in the mid 70's on Sunday! Thanks for the great memory man, great song too!Antero wrote:I'm only listening over relatively crappy headphones, but that sounds pretty damn awesome!Slider wrote:Here's the 388 recording if anyone cares.

Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
Back then my guitar amp was this awesome Setchel Carlson 15 watt tube amp from the 40's or 50's through an AC-15 cab. The amp was made to be a school announcement PA.
It had three channels, each with nothing but a huge UA style volume knob.
One said Phono on it, and the other two said Mic.
It had a tube socket for the speaker out.
The preamp tubes had wires clipped to the top of them.
If I ever see one again I'll buy it for sure.
It only sounded right through the vox bulldog speakers for some reason.
The 388 I had was a 7-Track because track 8 was broken.
Almost every 388 I've ever seen has at least one broken track.
