Yeah, but the quality went in the shitter. BASF/Emtec was the shit lately. Of course nothing, IMO, was as good as 996 (which became GP9 after 3M sold the formula to Ampex).

Joel Hamilton wrote:God Damn. That is fucking seriously sad news. I hope the guys can get it together on the tape front, SissyH. I hear ya on the grim outlook, but I am keeping the faith. Maybe people will wake the fuck up and support someone who bothers to make some tape now, if only 1/4" and 1/2" to start... Gotta start somewhere.
Ouch. Thank god I love the line drivers in the studer...... People are gonna start buying tape machines just to run protools through them on input, like I do now....
Yee haw.
Joel, I sincerely appreciate your optimism.

I didn't even know that Quantegy was in "reorganization" bankruptcy until last week when Andrew at Purple Audio posted a link on the Ampex mailing list. Quantegy had acquired the services of a "rescue" company to get an influx of money or a buyer. I posted that info on another thread.
As the last remaining supplier of open reel tape (unless there are secret companies in China or Russia or wherever), Quantegy was our last hope. I personally preferred Emtec, but since their German factory was dismantled last year (with much machinery sold as scrap metal), there was/is no other choice.
Time to clear out the supply "pipeline", tape users!
And, we all need to learn to accept the sonics of hard-drive systems and the inherent unreliability of 3" platters spinning at 7200 RPM.

What a drag. Analog tape is going to be an exclusive and expensive club to be in very soon. I just sold my AG 440 1" 8 track, and I guess my timing was good

I will be seriously worried when I hear news of the machinery used to make the tape is destroyed. Like someone said, analog will be an EXPENSIVE club to be in...

similar *panic* happened when yamaha stopped manufacturing the ns-10's cuz of the "lack of wood to make the cabinet" or some crapola...
everybody stocked up on woofers.
and a lot of the woofers were crapola.
now they're easy enough to get.
*vintage* monitors...
hehe
i thought there was a rumor about a year ago that quantegy was ending it...
anyone else recall?

Oh well. Maybe I'm NEVER gonna bother getting my 1" 8track up and running.
We'll see, we'll see.

Hillary...rumor? The Sunday local paper in Alabama reported that Quantegy padlocked the factory and laid off all employees. Read my original post with the link to the newspaper.
Geez...some folks just don't get it. Unknown to me until last week, Quantegy was already in bankruptcy... which can be found via a Google search.

This sounds like a clever scam to me. Just like Hillary said about the NS10's.
Quantegy:Hey guys we're not making tape anymore
TapeOps:Oh shit I must buy as much tape as I can. I will gladly pay 4 times the price that I usually pay to keep the dream alive.
3 months later............
Quantegy:Oh, hey guys, about that tape shortage thing we, umm, somehow came up with the money to make more now, umm, thanks for the, umm, support (snickers to self). It truly is a festivus miracle.

Sonik...anything is possible! I guess the Quantegy folks filed for bankruptcy and then padlocked the factory and laid off all employees as a scam.
Stranger things have happened!
