my new favorite compressor
... is distance
No it won't make stuff sound "in your face", but nothing knocks down peaks like moving the mic further away from the source. A little room ambience can often make a sound more exciting, which is usually what people are trying to do when they pile on the compression. Distance and compression are a great combo too.

Amen! But I'd still take a distressor if someone wants to give me one.....

I disagree about "what people are trying to do when they pile on compression" but I agree with you about some air, it can help make everything jell well.
Saying that people are "trying to do" anything is too general, and misleading and is instantly questionable. There are plenty of times where one would not hear the pile of compression on something, because it is done correctly, with the right tool for the job. Things get run through compressors for as many reasons as there are people on earth that record stuff. I personally have run bright things through a dark compressor with a TON of low ratio compression, and nobody has said "wow, you really compressed the shit out of THAT!"
Just one example of a trillion ways compressors can be used.
Like I said, I agree with you on your point about "air" though!

Am I the only one who moused over the red part thinking I'd find a link to some hot new plugin, only to feel totally, incredibly, astoundingly stupid after a short period of brow-furrowing?marqueemoon wrote:... is distance
So, is this distance compressor thing VST or DirectX? Is there a demo available so I can try it with my Fruity Loops? Or better yet, can someone send me a serial?

Re: my new favorite compressor
Hey Marquee, since you like distance so much, if you want I'll take those pesky 1176's off your hands. I won't even ask for any money or anything. I'd just take 'em.
That's what friends are for.

I suppose if your room is good and you're tracking. For a group, the band has to be balanced. Me, I usually have too much drum in the room to pull that off.
